Mei Chee Seong

  • Architect based in Penang, Malaysia
  • Co-founder, aLM & Partners
  • With over two decades of professional practice, his career began in building design and gradually evolved toward a design approach centered on curating experience, with a strong emphasis on the relationships between people and space, culture and context. At a stage when many settle into the comfort of midlife, Zhi Xiong felt a growing desire to re-explore life. He returned to painting to reconnect with a more intuitive and emotional sensibility; embraced triathlon to challenge his physical limits; and during the pandemic, immersed himself in the craft of baking. Through his daily engagement with bread and coffee, he gradually shaped his own philosophy of living. These seemingly unrelated pursuits have quietly expanded the way he perceives and understands the world. In 2017, he planted the seed of community-making in his mind.In 2022, together with his team, he co-founded Coex (Community Experiment), adopting a model of “sustaining ideals through professional practice.” Guided by a bottom-up, organic, and community-led approach, Coex seeks to create an inclusive and self-driven experimental platform for community development. It aims to cultivate a supportive environment for local arts and cultural communities, allowing culture to grow naturally and gradually form its own local narrative. This community-based practice, initiated from an architectural office, has also reshaped his understanding of architecture:Architecture is no longer merely the design of space, but the weaving of relationships—between people, and between people and place. In turn, his experience in community-making continues to influence his architectural practice—transforming architecture from a singular act of “building design” into a broader practice of curating and organizing lived experiences.
